The Northpoint team have undertaken a range of strategic, route development, advocacy, developing ancillary airport income, business aviation and airport investor projects.

For brevity we here focus on Airport Masterplanning

Airport masterplans have proven to be key documents for airports across the UK.  They act not only as important documents for local engagement, but also establish a long term development frameworks which can be used as the basis for future planning approvals, the site asset register, funding applications and marketing of opportunities the airport offers.

Chris Cain was responsible for drawing up the Guidance on Airport Masterplans during his time at DfT before taking the lead role in preparing the Masterplan at Newquay and assisting Peel Holdings with their plans for Durham Tees Valley and Regional Airport’s documents for Biggin Hill and Southend. He is therefore completely familiar with the preparatory process, the elements that need to be included, the consultations that are needed and the way in which the documents can be used subsequently.

The plan typically will need to examine not only potential aviation throughput, including possible new commercial routes as well as GA, and training and the operational infrastructure and safeguarding needed to support this, but also associated commercial development encompassing existing and new facilities.

The Masterplan then provides a basis for drawing up a programme of infrastructure improvements and commercial investment opportunities, which can form the basis for funding applications both to Europe and UK programmes to facilitate the generation of commercially and environmentally sustainable development. It will also be the back-drop to future business planning and needs to be closely dovetailed with such processes.

The Northpoint team can offer unique insights and extensive experience in the masterplanning and funding processes.  Chris Cain and Stephen Murdoch have had lead roles in the regard, successfully securing, for one client, nearly £50m of funding from external sources, terminal and airfield improvements, including preparing bids, negotiating detailed contracts and securing state aid approvals.
