Managing Director and founder of Northpoint, Basil O’Fee (MA Cantab), has worked on the full range of commercial and marketing roles during his career in senior management with a regional airline group. He also has research and consultancy experience in air operator, airport, airfreight, state aid in aviation, transnational collaborations, remote region aviation, business aviation and air charter activities. Alongside fellow associate Dr Rico Merkert he co-moderates a LinkedIn Discussion group on Aviation in Remoter Regions with over 1200 international members, and has cooperated with Dr Merkert on original and published research on Public Service Obligation air services.

Rebecca spent over 10 years in the marketing industry and was an Account Director at worldwide advertising agency Ogilvy and Mather where she was involved in creating campaigns for clients such as IBM, British Telecom, Huggies and British Gas. Her role included definition of marketing strategy, development of creative, implementation of campaigns, management of budgets, leading of a team and post-campaign analysis.

At Northpoint Rebecca provides project management support to the associates whilst also co-ordinating Northpoint’s secretariat function for certain key clients. She played a central role in the UK National Connectivity Taskforce including coordination, minuting, event bookings and report launch arrangements, report proof-reading and preparation for and arrangement of printing.

Rebecca has also been involved in document drafting and preparation of proposals and tracking and identification of tendering opportunities.

She is significantly involved in Northpoint’s new commitments to the Strategic Aviation Special Interest Group (SASIG).

Tom Matthew is a highly experienced economist who has undertaken a significant amount of economic research in the aviation field. He has 18 years consultancy experience working for both big and small consultancy practices as well as on a freelance basis. Tom has also worked for Highlands & Islands Enterprise, the Scottish Government’s regional development agency, where he was responsible for developing transport policy across all modes, including aviation. Tom has considerable experience in assessing the economic impacts of airports, individual air routes and investment in airport infrastructure. Dr Rico Merkert

Dr Rico Merkert

Senior Associate and Senior Lecturer in Aviation Management

Dr Rico Merkert is currently Senior Lecturer in Aviation Management at the Institute of Transport and Logistics Studies (ITLS) at the University of Sydney Business School. He has been involved in a number of projects on transport economics, policy and management (including strategy, organisation and finance, M&A) for a range of clients such as the European Commission and a number of airlines. Rico has worked in the automotive industry, and has researched both the aviation and the rail transport sector for more than 8 years (including short research fellowships in the USA and Sweden). Until February 2012 Rico Lecturer and Head of Centre for Air Transport in Remoter Regions at University of Cranfield. Most of his recent projects involved productivity and cost efficiency analysis of airlines and airports. Since his research visits to the University of Sydney in 2010 and 2011 he focuses on applying efficiency analysis, transaction cost economics and choice modelling to public transport, particularly regional air transport in Australia and Europe. Rico is also a founder member of the Transport in Peripheral Regions Research Network (TPRRN). Dr Romano Pagliari is Course Director, Full and Part-time MSc’s in Airport Planning and Management at Cranfield University Department of Air Transport. Romano Pagliari obtained a masters degree in transport and a PhD in airport slot allocation from the Cranfield University School of Management.
