The recent chapter in the UK DfT’s Aviation 2050 Green Paper on new technologies highlights the potential for disruptive technologies that could transform access to passenger services and freight at a local level, but also the way in which they are configured and delivered at a global level and in so doing materially change the sector’s relationships with local communities and businesses, city and regional economies and the wider environment.
The Green Paper also offered a clear commitment to support the Government’s ambition to establish the UK as a leader in developing and introducing such technologies, not only to benefit of the UK industry’s security and competitiveness, but also its ability to generate exports and sustain valuable trading relationships, enhance operational efficiency, resilience and environmental performance and improve the air travel experience for consumers.
This is a big agenda, and one for which there is an urgent need for a coherent high level strategy that sets out the key parameters of a policy and regulatory framework for their introduction in a form that allows UK companies to gain and important domestic and international foothold.
